The strings are a much higher quality than I expected (maybe changed out by the dealer?) I played a KM-150 a few weeks ago at a local music store. Tuning was perfect on all string courses right out of the case. I don't like giving 10s, but there you have it. Overall this mandolin is a real LOOKER (the wife & daughter just love the Celtic/Medieval vibe!) Had I paid $1K for this mandolin, I may have brought this up to the vendor, but for a starter instrument, no big deal. The blemish is crescent moon shaped, and about. However, I should note that there is a very small blemish on the back of the neck, about opposite the 7th fret. VERY NICE! I'm scoring the KM-172 an 8 out of 10 here (which is very high for me). One of the highlights of the design is unquestionably the peghead, with its rosewood overlay and very classy, well-done inlaid Kentucky script in pearl. Overall workmanship is frankly shockingly good for the price level. A list of all of the features can be found here:įinish: Absolutely beautiful glossy honey amber finish on the soundboard! I found the frets to be very well polished, and the comprehensive binding to be very attractive. Its back and sides are made of solid, hand-carved flamed maple, and it has a one-piece maple neck, with a dovetail joint.

I will not list all of the features here, but suffice it to say that the KM-172 has a soundboard made of solid, hand-carved and graduated spruce.

This is a Very Nice Package.įeatures: One of the main reasons I chose this mandolin was for its features at this price level. I could find pricing on the KM-172 somewhat lower, but with no case and no extras. Overall, I find the value of this package to be outstanding. The package included the mandolin, a pretty nice hard-shell case (Guardian model GC-020-MA), a Play-On ET-3000 clip-on tuner, a few picks, and an introductory 'how-to' play mandolin book and DVD. I patiently (but painfully) allowed the entire package several hours to warm-up to room temperature before opening and unpacking. My new KM-172 arrived from 'The Mandolin Hut' early this afternoon.
